Haiku Challenge+Renga?

Thu May 7, 2009, 3:40 PM
Ok, so I've been writing a lot of Haiku. :D And I've come up with a idea. ^_^

I think I am going to take on a challenge for myself of writing at least one Haiku per day. :D

Tell me what you think. ^_^ And if you want to take up the challenge too, awesome! 17 syllables a day won't hurt you. (And if you opt to do free-form, well that's fine. XD I'm not gonna count your syllables! lol.)

Oh! I'm looking for a group willing to try a renga too. A multi-stanza Japanese poem that is generally a collaboration piece comprising different poets. Each stanza is a haiku poem. There is not always a set limit of stanzas. Look into it if you'd want to write one! I'd love to give it a try. ^_^

Interesting proposition. I usually prefer waka myself, but haiku might be a challenge. Dunno if I'd have the time right now, but maybe later.

Waka? What is this? A new poetry form! Fascinating! Please tell me about it. ^_^ I've never heard about it!

I'm learning Haiku, by writing it. It's a interesting experience! I've come to learn a lot through doing it. ^_^

Haiku and renga are the only Japanese forms I know of. Is renga a collabative haiku? Cause I'd love to try that! ^_^

:iconkeichoku:
Waka is the ancestor-form of haiku. Waka (tanka) are 5-7-5-7-7. Lady Murasaki and those Heian era writers used this form. I prefer writing in this form in Japanese, though it's not easy to get the language and 'code-words' down right. Ki no Tsurayuki (I think he was the one who said this) was right, though-- do it enough and your thoughts start falling into that syllable format.

Haiku (haikai) immediately descends from renga, though-- haiku was one person's "section" of a renga sequence, if I recall correctly.

Ah. Ok. So the haiku is like a segment for renga. How many segments does a renga have? Or does it matter?

Maybe I'll try a waka. :D I'd never heard of it before. You think it would be difficult in English?

:iconkeichoku:
I don't know if there's a set number of haiku-sections to a renga, I think they just keep going.

Waka shouldn't be hard in English.

Ah ok. Well maybe I'll give it a try sometime. I'll try Waka too. Thank you. ^_^
